How to Choose the Right GCSE Maths Tutor
A good GCSE maths tutor can make a real difference, but the right fit matters more than a long CV. These are the questions worth asking before you book.
1. Do they know your child's exam board and tier?
AQA, Edexcel and OCR test the same maths in different styles. Ask which board the tutor usually teaches and whether they are comfortable with Foundation or Higher tier, whichever your child sits.
2. How will they find the gaps?
Strong tutors begin with a short diagnostic — a past paper or topic check — rather than starting at chapter one. Ask how the first two lessons will be used.
3. What does a typical lesson look like?
Look for a mix of explanation, guided practice and independent questions, with the student doing most of the writing.
- Clear learning goal for the session
- Worked examples, then student attempts
- Exam-style questions marked against a real mark scheme
- Short homework that reinforces the lesson
4. How will you hear about progress?
Brief, regular updates help you see whether tutoring is working. Ask how often they report and what they will share.
5. Be wary of grade guarantees
No tutor can honestly guarantee a grade. A trustworthy tutor will set realistic targets and explain what the student needs to do between lessons.
