GCSE Maths Revision Tips That Actually Work

Reading a revision guide feels productive, but maths is learned by doing. This plan focuses on practice, feedback and past papers.

Start with your specification checklist

Download the specification for your board (AQA 8300, Edexcel 1MA1 or OCR J560) from the exam board's website and turn the content list into a red-amber-green checklist. Revise red topics first.

Practise actively

Use a revision book or booklet for short explanations, then move straight to questions. Cover the worked answer, attempt it yourself and only then check.

Use past papers in three stages

Past papers are the closest thing to the real exam.

  • Stage 1: open-book, untimed, to learn the question styles
  • Stage 2: single papers under timed conditions
  • Stage 3: full sets (calculator and non-calculator) in exam conditions

Keep a mistakes log

Write down every question you lose marks on, why, and the correct method. Re-attempt those questions a week later — this is often where the biggest gains are.

Look after method marks

Show every step. Even when the final answer is wrong, clear working can still earn most of the marks.
